Sebastian grew up in Perth, Ontario and moved to Collegeville, Minnesota after high school where he earned a BA and MA in Theology and History from Saint John’s University and School of Theology. He taught at the university and prep school for one year before moving back to Ontario in 2011.
Since joining Salt and Light as a producer and host, Sebastian has created a number of original series and documentaries including, The Church Alive, a 13-part series on Vatican II and the New Evangelization that won the 2014 Gabriel Award for best religious television series; The Francis Effect, a widely-acclaimed documentary on how Pope Francis rapidly changed the image of the Catholic Church; and The Birth of the Messiah, an exploration of the infancy narratives in the Gospels using the most up-to-date Catholic biblical and archeological scholarship.
Sebastian is currently the writer and host of Salt and Light’s book review show Subject Matters, with visually rich and thought-provoking conversations on relevant topics.
As a correspondent for Salt and Light, Sebastian has covered a number of major events in the Catholic Church, including the 2012 Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization, the 2013 papal transition, the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio, the 2014 and 2015 Synods of Bishops on the Family, and the 2016 World Youth Day in Krakow.
Sebastian has lectured on various topics related to the Catholic Church across North America, and writes regularly for the Salt and Light blog and magazine. His articles have appeared in L'Osservatore Romano, The Tablet (London), The BC Catholic, among others.
Sebastian is currently in production of a new documentary entitled, The Francis Impact, a sequel to The Francis Effect to mark the five-year anniversary of the Pope’s election. The film explores how and where the Pope’s vision has taken root and is effecting real grassroots change.
His love of history is evident in his approach to contemporary questions about the Catholic Church and its relationship to the wider society. In particular, Sebastian enjoys studying the enduring legacy of the Second Vatican Council and the writings of the recent Popes from Saint John XXIII to Pope Francis.
