Within Your Gates

In May 2009, Benedict XVI became just the third pope to ever visit the Holy Land. His encounter with the Fifth Gospel, as this land is often described, cast new light on the shrines that commemorate the life of Jesus, as well as the rugged geography He roamed two thousand years ago. Kris Dmytrenko retraces the Pope's pilgrim path through Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Dmytrenko leads viewers from Nazareth, home of the Holy Family; to the shores of the Galilee, where Jesus preached and healed; and finally through the gates of Jerusalem, where love triumphed over death. Biblical passages and the Pope's homilies breathe life into the ancient sites. Rare footage and a stirring soundtrack capture the Holy Land as never before.

In this episode, Mark Riedemann interviews Fr. Poul Misik, a priest from Papua New Guinea. Fr. Poul shares his experiences as a child growing up in the rural area of the Highlands of the country, a community still rooted in tribal social structures. One of the challenges in the region is the constant rivalry between the tribes that translate into violent episodes. But one of the main challenges the Church faces in PNG is the brutal transformation that globalization has brought to this society, giving access to technology that is significantly affecting the social fabric.

The Island of the Monks
The monastery of Sion, in the Netherlands, has room for 120 monks. But in 2013 there were only eight monks left. They started to think of moving, make a new beginning somewhere else and hopefully attract new men to join their community. And so the idea was born of returning to the island in the north of Holland that bears their name: Schiermonnikoog, that means Island of the Grey Monks. But moving isn't that easy. These men of prayer were confronted by inner and outer turmoil, doubts and fears. They had to answer the questions: What makes someone a monk and why are they here?

Bangladeshis are religious minded with most citizens belonging to the Muslim faith. In fact, Bangladesh has the third-largest Muslim population in the world.
